@t4@f02@cCDTV :@t2A touch of class ???
@t5@f00When the @t CDTV @t5 first appeared, some
people wondered why it was based on
the not-so-powerful A500 computer.
The built-in 68000 chip is not
adequate enough to deal with the
enormous capa- city that the@t4 CDTV@t5 can
handle, when you have the enormous
capacity of a @t4 CD@t5 you should have a
real powerful com puter with it, eh??
Something like an Amiga with 68040, or
something...
This is of course true. It's possible
to place most of a@t4 CD@t5 on a normal disc
and because all@t4 CDTV@t5 programs are DOS-
based, the files can simply be copied
with a program like diskmaster. The
@^
@t5only advantage the@t4 CDTV@t5 now seems to
have is its enormous capacity (just
think when the writable CD's are intro
duced, how big a BBS can be !!) and
that's probably exactly why Commodore
have not (yet) produced a professional
computer around it. The other reason
might be Commodore's idea of the@t4 CDTV:@t5
a cheap (relatively) computer capable
of stunning graphics and sound,
combined with the fast CD loading...
But, not all files of a@t4 CDTV@t5 disc can
be placed on a disc just like that.
Some of the files are of course too
long for one disc, but here the HD is
a welcome solution. You would of
course need some more memory than the
@#
@^
@t5'lousy' 1 mega to be able to check the
files... And then there are some
files that can never be loaded, simply
@t5be cause they use some hardware
thingies (normally called 'chips')
which the normal Amiga doesn't have
(ever encountered an 'ASL' library)
When considering all this, you have to
realise what you're paying for when
you buy a@t4 CDTV@t5 console.
So what are you getting for your
money?
An Amiga 500, nowadays worth about 300
pounds. This includes the one-meg
ram. a CD-player, worth about 100
pounds (very rough guess). Software,
worth up to 60 pounds.
@^
This makes almost 500 pounds you would
have payed normally. The price of a
@t4CDTV @t5 will probably be around 600
pounds, so it does look as if it's
quite good value for money (ofcourse
if you don't own a CD-player yet...)
So what's the catch ?? Of course the
fact that you don't get a true Amiga!!
There's no keyboard, no mouse and no
3.5 drive. So if you have already got
an Amiga and want to swap it for a
CDTV, you'll have to pay much more to
get the same you used to have (BTW,a
normal A1000/2000 keyboard CAN be
plugged into the@t4 CDTV@t5 so thats no real
problem, and the infrared keyboards
by Commodore have been seen already,
as well...).
Well then, if you're too fond of your
A500 you could always buy the@t3 CD ROM
@#
@^
@t5drive@t5 (A690 Optical), which isn't in-
troduced officially yet, but there are
@t5several other drives that can be used
as @t3 CD ROM@t5 for your Amiga as well, the
best is the Mitshubishi one. Fact is,
that Commodore will release a REAL
version that is capable of running all
@t4CDTV @t5 software (by inserting some of
the chip technology of the@t4 CDTV@t5 into
the A690...
